Herbalife Protein Bars: What the Numbers Say

Herbalife sells two kinds of bar. The 35 g Protein Bars are snacks with 10 g of protein and 137 to 139 kcal. The 56 g Formula 1 Express bars are meal replacements with 13 to 15 g of protein, 6 to 7 g of fibre and 207 to 209 kcal. Choose by the job the bar must do.

Two bars, two different jobs

The two ranges look alike on a shelf, and that is where the confusion starts. They sit in different legal categories and carry different directions.

Herbalife Protein Bars are snacks. The label suggests one or two a day within a balanced diet. They are designed to add protein between meals, not to stand in for a meal.

Formula 1 Express Healthy Meal Bars are meal replacements, in the same category as Formula 1 shakes. They carry the authorised meal replacement claims. Substituting two daily meals of an energy-restricted diet with meal replacements contributes to weight loss. Substituting one daily meal contributes to the maintenance of weight after weight loss.

What the numbers tell you

Protein

All four bars qualify as high in protein under GB labelling rules, which require at least 20% of a food's energy to come from protein. In the Protein Bars, protein supplies about 29% of the energy. The Dark Chocolate meal bar sits at about 25% and the Cranberry bar at about 29%.

That allows an authorised claim: protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass. For context, the UK reference intake for protein is 50 g a day. A Protein Bar covers a fifth of that, and a Cranberry meal bar nearly a third.

Sugars

This is the line to read carefully. The Protein Bars carry 10 to 11 g of sugars each, which is about a third of the bar by weight. Their ingredients include glucose syrup, fructose syrup and a milk chocolate coating, so most of that sugar counts as free sugars. The NHS guideline for adults is no more than 30 g of free sugars a day.

One bar fits within that comfortably. Two bars plus a sweet coffee and a biscuit starts to crowd it. The Dark Chocolate meal bar is the lowest of the four at 8 g.

Fibre

Here the two ranges split sharply. The Protein Bars contain almost no fibre. The meal bars give 6 to 7 g, helped by an added fibre ingredient, which is a meaningful step towards the NHS guideline of 30 g a day.

Vitamins

The Protein Bars add B vitamins. Each bar supplies more than 60% of the reference intake for thiamin, riboflavin and vitamin B6, with B12 at 44% to 52%. The meal bars carry a wider spread, formulated with 25 vitamins and minerals, as a meal replacement must.

Allergens and dietary suitability

This is where the bars differ most, and where a quick glance at the box is not enough.

  • Protein Bar Vanilla Almond. Contains soy, milk and almonds. May contain traces of other nuts, eggs, peanuts and gluten.
  • Protein Bar Citrus Lemon. Contains soy, milk and egg. May contain traces of peanuts, nuts and gluten.
  • F1 Express Dark Chocolate. Contains soy. May contain milk, eggs, cereals containing gluten, nuts, peanuts and sesame.
  • F1 Express Cranberry and White Chocolate. Contains soy and milk. May contain eggs, cereals containing gluten, nuts, peanuts and sesame.

Both Protein Bar recipes list gelatin in their ingredients, so they do not suit vegetarians. Herbalife labels the Formula 1 Express meal bars as suitable for vegetarians. None of the four is labelled vegan.

Which bar for which moment

A snack between meals

Use a Protein Bar. At under 140 kcal with 10 g of protein, it suits the gap between lunch and a late dinner. The Citrus Lemon box is the lighter-tasting option, and Vanilla Almond is the richer one.

A meal you cannot sit down for

Use a Formula 1 Express bar. It replaces a meal, so treat it as lunch rather than an extra. Pair it with water or a hot drink and, if you can, a piece of fruit. The Cranberry and White Chocolate bar has the most protein of the range.

After a workout

Either can work, depending on what comes next. If a proper meal follows within an hour or two, a Protein Bar tides you over. If it does not, the meal bar does more of the work.

How to judge any bar yourself

Turn the box over and read three lines before anything else: protein, sugars and fibre per bar. Then check the allergen panel. Front-of-pack words like indulgent or guilt-free tell you nothing useful. Our guide on how to read a Herbalife nutrition label covers the rest of the panel.

If you are building bars into a new routine, the first fortnight plan shows where a snack fits. You can see the whole range in protein snacks and bars.

Meal replacement products are not suitable for children, or for pregnant or breastfeeding women without medical advice. If you have a medical condition or take medication, including GLP-1 weight-loss injections, speak to your GP first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I eat a Protein Bar instead of lunch?

It is not designed for that. At around 138 kcal with almost no fibre, it falls short of a meal. Use a Formula 1 Express bar or a shake when you need to replace a meal.

Why do the Protein Bars contain gelatin?

Gelatin appears in both Protein Bar ingredient lists as part of the recipe. It is an animal-derived ingredient, which is why these bars do not suit vegetarians or vegans. The Formula 1 Express bars do not list it.

Are Herbalife bars gluten-free?

None of the four bars is labelled gluten-free. Each carries a may-contain warning for gluten, so anyone who must avoid gluten strictly should take that warning seriously and choose another snack.

How many meal bars can I have in a day?

The directions allow one or two main meals a day to be replaced, with at least one balanced meal. That covers bars and shakes together, not each separately.

Which Herbalife bar has the least sugar?

Of these four, the Formula 1 Express Dark Chocolate bar has the least at 8 g per bar. It also has the most fibre at 7 g. Among the snack bars, Citrus Lemon edges Vanilla Almond by 1 g.
