Herbalife Products for Women Over 40: What Is Worth a Look

The Herbalife products that come up most for women over 40 are Formula 1 shakes and Protein Drink Mix for protein, Xtra-Cal for calcium, Formula 2 Women's for iron and vitamin D, and Oat Apple Fibre. None of them treats menopause. Each supplies nutrients with specific roles that UK law allows us to state.

Why the questions change after 40

Nothing dramatic happens on your fortieth birthday. What shifts is the conversation around you. Bone health, energy, muscle and perimenopause start appearing in every magazine, and the supplement aisle notices. The result is a lot of noise. This guide cuts it down to five nutrients, the products that carry meaningful amounts, and what the rules actually let anyone say about them.

That last part matters more than it sounds. In Great Britain, a health claim on a food must appear on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims register. The product must also contain a significant amount of the nutrient before the claim can be used. So if a shake promises to balance your hormones, someone has gone off script. We stay on it.

A word on menopause first

Menopause and perimenopause are a matter for your GP, not a shake tub. The NHS describes them as a natural stage that usually affects women between 45 and 55, though it can start earlier. Symptoms vary a great deal, and some treatments interact with diet and supplements. If you take HRT, other prescribed medicine or a GLP-1 weight-loss injection, speak to your GP or pharmacist before adding anything below. Nothing here is a menopause treatment, and no Herbalife product is sold as one.

The five nutrients and where to find them

1. Protein: Formula 1 and Protein Drink Mix

Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass and to the maintenance of normal bones. Those are authorised claims for foods that are at least a source of protein.

  • Formula 1 Healthy Meal. Two scoops (26 g) with 250 ml of semi-skimmed milk give 18 g of protein. Made with fortified soy drink, the Smooth Chocolate figure is 16 g.
  • Protein Drink Mix. Two tablespoons (28 g) in 250 ml of water give 15 g of protein, 108 kcal and 0.3 g of sugars.
  • Formula 3 Protein Powder. A neutral powder giving 5 g of protein per 6 g tablespoon, for soups, sauces or a shake.

You can pick up Formula 1 in any standard flavour, or add Protein Drink Mix if a shake alone feels light. Formula 1 is a meal replacement, so its claims come with conditions. Substituting one daily meal of an energy-restricted diet with a meal replacement contributes to the maintenance of weight after weight loss. Substituting two daily meals contributes to weight loss. Both assume a calorie-controlled diet and an active routine.

2. Calcium: Xtra-Cal

Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. The NHS says adults need 700 mg a day. It also warns that high doses, above 1,500 mg a day, could lead to stomach pain and diarrhoea.

  • Xtra-Cal. Three tablets a day, one with each main meal, provide 999 mg of calcium. That is 125% of the reference intake.
  • Formula 1 with milk. One serving provides 423 mg, or 53%. A good share of that comes from the milk.
  • Formula 2 Women's. Two tablets provide 300 mg, or 38%.

Add these up before you commit. A shake with milk, three Xtra-Cal tablets and two Formula 2 tablets reach 1,722 mg before any other food. That sits above the level the NHS flags. Choose the combination that fills your real gap, not all three.

3. Vitamin D: the quiet one

Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal muscle function. It also contributes to the normal absorption and use of calcium. The NHS advises everyone to consider a daily 10 microgram supplement in autumn and winter, when UK sunlight is too weak for your skin to make enough. It also says not to take more than 100 micrograms a day.

  • Formula 2 Women's. Two tablets provide 20 ¬µg, which is 400% of the reference intake.
  • Xtra-Cal. Three tablets provide 2.3 ¬µg, or 46%.
  • Formula 1 with milk. One serving provides 2.1 ¬µg, or 42%.

If you already take a separate vitamin D spray or tablet, check the combined total. Doubling up is easy to miss because the amounts are printed in micrograms, which look tiny on a label.

4. Iron: Formula 2 Women's

Iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to the normal formation of red blood cells. The NHS puts iron needs at 14.8 mg a day for women aged 19 to 49 and 8.7 mg for women aged 50 and over. It adds that women still having periods after 50 may need the higher amount.

  • Formula 2 Women's. Two tablets provide 13 mg, which is 93% of the reference intake.
  • Formula 1 with milk. One serving provides 5.8 mg, or 41%.

The NHS notes that 17 mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm. Tiredness has many causes, so ongoing fatigue deserves a GP appointment before a shopping basket. Formula 2 Women's also contains vitamin B6, which contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity. That is an authorised general claim. It does not mean the tablet eases menopause symptoms, and nobody should tell you otherwise.

5. Fibre: Oat Apple Fibre and the shake itself

Government guidelines quoted by the NHS say adults should aim for 30 g of fibre a day. The NHS also says most of us need to eat more of it.

  • Oat Apple Fibre. One scoop (6.8 g) in 150 ml of water provides 5 g of fibre and 18 kcal. Oat grain fibre contributes to an increase in faecal bulk, which is the authorised wording, unglamorous as it is.
  • Formula 1 Smooth Chocolate with milk. One serving provides 5 g of fibre.

Oat Apple Fibre stirs into water, a shake or morning oats. Increase fibre gradually and keep your water intake up as you go.

Two more products that come up, with caveats

Collagen Skin Booster

Collagen drinks are popular in this age group. On the GB register, the relevant authorised claim belongs to vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. The collagen peptides themselves carry no authorised health claim, so treat any bigger promise with a raised eyebrow.

Instant Herbal Beverage

The tea is a caffeine drink. One serving of the Original flavour contains 87.5 mg of caffeine. There is no authorised claim that it raises your metabolic rate. Our tea and caffeine explainer sets out the detail.

How to choose without overbuying

Start with food. Look at a normal week of eating and find the gap you can actually see. If breakfast is toast and coffee, a protein shake is a sensible first move. If you already have dairy three times a day, extra calcium may add little.

Read the panel. Our guide to reading a Herbalife nutrition label explains serving sizes and reference intakes in plain English. For the shake in detail, see what Formula 1 actually does.

Check allergens. Every standard Formula 1 flavour mentioned here contains soy and oat. Protein Drink Mix contains soy and milk.

Buy one thing, then review. Give a single product a few weeks before adding another. The full vitamins and supplements range will still be there when you know what you need.

Frequently asked questions

Can Herbalife products help with menopause symptoms?

No Herbalife product is authorised to treat or relieve menopause symptoms. Some contain nutrients with authorised roles, such as calcium for normal bones. Symptoms and treatment options are a conversation for your GP.

Do I need Xtra-Cal if I drink Formula 1 with milk?

Not necessarily. One shake made with semi-skimmed milk provides 423 mg of calcium, against the NHS figure of 700 mg a day for adults. Your other meals may cover the rest.

How much vitamin D is in Formula 2 Women's?

Two tablets provide 20 µg. The NHS suggests 10 µg a day is enough for most people and advises against taking more than 100 µg a day.

Is Formula 1 suitable if I take HRT?

We cannot advise on medication. Ask your GP or pharmacist before replacing meals or adding supplements alongside any prescribed treatment, including HRT.

Can I make Formula 1 without dairy?

Yes. Herbalife suggests 250 ml of fortified soy drink instead of milk. The shake still contains soy and oat, so it is not suitable for anyone allergic to either.
